What is a beeswax bag?

Beeswax bags, or beeswax cloth bags as they are sometimes called, are made from beeswax cloth that is sewn together at the edges. They are easy to close using the flap at the top and can be reused for around two years. Beeswax bags are used to keep food fresh for longer and are ideal for bread, cheese, or vegetables, for example.

What are beeswax bags suitable for?

Choosing between beeswax wraps or beeswax bags is really a matter of preference.

Beeswax bags are perfect if you are on the go and want to take a picnic or lunch with you. They are also ideal for wrapping grapes, nuts, or snacks such as cookies and buns.

Examples of use:

  • 5-liter bags for wrapping larger loaves of bread.
  • 3-liter bags for wrapping a block of cheese.
  • 1-liter bags for wrapping a sandwich or half a vegetable.
  • Snack bags for nuts or a couple of cookies.

You can also buy mixed packs, which give you one of each at a discounted price.

Do beeswax bags stay closed tightly?

Absolutely. Your beeswax bag has a small open flap at the top. This is so that it is easy to close again.

Put whatever you want in the bag, close the flap, and fold it over a couple of times.

You can even turn it upside down a couple of times to make sure it is sufficiently sealed.

How do you wash beeswax bags?

You may need to wash your beeswax bag between uses. There's nothing strange about that. Just do the following:

  1. Fill the beeswax bag with cold water.
  2. If necessary, add a drop of dish soap.
  3. If you can and want to, scrub the inside of the bag with a long dish brush.
  4. Close the bag and shake it.
  5. Pour out and rinse with cold water.
  6. Leave to dry.

Remember to use cold water. Hot water (or heat in general) is the enemy of beeswax wraps. Hot water causes the wax to melt, making the wrap sticky and gooey (not nice).

How long does a beeswax bag last?

A beeswax bag is reusable for about two years.

How do you store beeswax bags?

You can store your beeswax bags pretty much anywhere. On a shelf, the kitchen counter, or in a dedicated box. The only thing to avoid is exposing them to direct sunlight for too long. If you've taken your beeswax bag on a picnic, it's a good idea to keep it in the shade.

Beeswax bags work great for both the freezer and the refrigerator. If you've put a beeswax bag in the freezer, let it “thaw” for a few minutes before opening it. Freezing the bag won't damage it.
